49ers Offseason so far 3-2-2009

Last week the 49ers made their first two Free Agent signings. FB Moran Norris was the first, and he was signed to a 3 year 5 million dollar deal. I won’t go into Norris here, because he played for the 49ers from 2006 until 2007 when he was cut from the three year 3 million dollar contract he had signed the previous season.

The Brandon Jones signing to me, seems to be much of the same from the 49ers the last few years. Since Terrell Owens left, we have been about bringing in as many 2 or 3 receivers as we can. Each of these seems to have potential that we hope to tap, but it just never seems to work out.

Examples of this would be Ashley Lelie, Bryant Johnson, Isaac Bruce, Antonio Bryant, and I can’t think of any more off the top of my head. So, that makes five (counting Jones) #2/3 receivers picked up as Free Agents in 4 years. We seem to try every type of player, whether it’s a deep threat (Lelie), Possession receiver (Bryant, Johnson), or a crafty veteran (Bruce).

I think we have tried this formula long enough to know that we cannot just fill our offense with mediocre receivers and expect to have a good offense. The 49ers offense could barely succeed last year (21st in total yardage).

Frank Gore cannot succeed without either a solid Quarterback (Warner) or a big time receiver (Houzmanzada). The offensive line has room for upgrades as well, but I just cannot see a way for this team to be a real threat unless they become something more than “Frank Gore and company.”

Brandon Jones and Moran Norris do not change the fact that we have a flat offense.

I will talk about the defense when they start signing defensive free agents.
